A Brief History of ASPiH


The Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) was founded in 2008. It has spent the past 15 years dedicated to advancing simulation-based education. ASPiH has played a crucial role in supporting healthcare professionals across the UK, Ireland, and beyond by fostering collaboration among its members, other professional societies, and commercial partners. This year’s conference will celebrate ASPiH’s contributions to the simulation community and look ahead to the future of this rapidly evolving field.

Keynote Speakers at the ASPiH Conference 2024


The conference will feature an impressive lineup of keynote speakers, each bringing unique expertise and insight to the stage:

  • Professor Steven Yule (The University of Edinburgh) will deliver a keynote on November 4th. This is entitled “How Human Factors Can Contribute to the Improvement of Team Performance and Patient Safety”. As Chair of Behavioural Sciences, Professor Yule leads groundbreaking research in surgical innovation, human factors, and patient safety.
  • Professor Roger Kneebone (Imperial College London) will explore “The Transformation of Simulation Over Time”. A leader in simulation science, Professor Kneebone combines his background as a surgeon and general practitioner with his work in performance science, shaping new approaches to medical education.
  • Dr. Claire Kilbride (Bristol Royal Infirmary) will discuss “Simulation in Global Health Partnerships” on November 5th. With her extensive experience with Médecins Sans Frontières and her current work in simulation-based healthcare initiatives in Kenya, Dr. Kilbride brings a global perspective to the role of simulation in healthcare.

Although it may seem far off, SentiraXR is already gearing up for the ASPiH Conference 2024. The event takes place from November 3rd to 5th at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

The Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), established in 2008, has spent the past 15 years evolving and expanding its support for members while fostering relationships with other societies and commercial partners within the simulation community. Throughout its journey, ASPiH has advanced simulation-based education across the UK, Ireland, and beyond. This year’s conference will celebrate these accomplishments and provide a platform for discussing the future of the simulation community.

Speakers at ASPiH 2024

Several distinguished speakers have already been announced for the event. On Monday, November 4th, Professor Steven Yule from The University of Edinburgh will deliver a keynote address titled “How Human Factors Can Contribute to Improvement of Team Performance and Patient Safety”. Professor Yule is Chair of Behavioural Sciences at Edinburgh and leads international innovations in surgical research, human factors and patient safety.

Professor Roger Kneebone will deliver a keynote on “The Transformation of Simulation Over Time”. Professor Kneebone leads the Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Music–Imperial Centre for Performance Science. His research combines his experiences as a surgeon and general practitioner with his interest in expertise beyond medicine. Since 2019, he has been the fourteenth Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy of Arts.

On Tuesday, November 5th, Dr. Claire Kilbride will present the keynote talk, “Simulation in Global Health Partnerships.” Dr. Kilbride is a Senior Clinical Fellow at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. She has extensive experience with Médecins Sans Frontières in various countries and the MSF Field Simulation Team in Barcelona. She currently works with Dharura, a partnership between the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Laikipia County in Kenya, where simulation programs and quality improvement projects are conducted in regional hospitals and clinics.

The conference will also feature an exhibition showcasing leading suppliers in the simulation community. SentiraXR is excited to participate under the ‘New to ASPiH’ sponsorship option.

Next week, the SentiraXR team will showcase our cutting-edge virtual reality experiences at the Universally Manchester Festival, a four-day celebration to mark The University of Manchester’s 200th anniversary. As a proud spin-out company from the University, we’re delighted to take part in this wonderful event.

Festival Overview

The Universally Manchester Festival takes over the University of Manchester campus from Thursday, June 6th to Sunday, June 9th, 2024. This free event is a diverse and dynamic celebration, offering attendees the chance to put together their own unique programme from a variety of activities. From behind-the-scenes tours and salon discussions to music, theatre, comedy, art, poetry, and wellbeing sessions, there’s something for everyone.

Each day will spotlight different themes, from poetry to physics, music to medicine, and computing to creative writing. With more than 150 imaginative and immersive events planned, the festival will transform areas across the campus—labs, concert theatres, outdoor spaces, and the University’s acclaimed cultural venues like the Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum—into buzzing hubs of activity.

Sentira XR Announces Successful Completion of its Seed Investment Round

The investment capital will be used to support the development of their medical simulations and to launch their go-to-market strategy. Angel investors with expertise from across the edtech field participated in the SEIS funding round. 

Dr Tony Payton and Dr Martin Fergie from the University of Manchester founded Sentira XR to revolutionise the training of healthcare professionals using VR and AI technologies. Experienced edtech leader Jeremy Carter joined them in late 2022 as CEO.

National Conference on Generative AI in Education at Ulster University

National Conference on Generative AI in Education 22-24 January 2024

The SentiraXR team will shortly be heading to Ulster University to take part in the National Conference on Generative AI in Education. The event takes place in person at the University’s Derry~Londonderry campus from the 22nd to 24th January.

We’re delighted to have been asked to present around the use of generative AI to interact with patient avatars. Jeremy Carter and Sentira founder, Dr Tony Payton will discuss our pioneering virtual reality training simulations for medical education and outline our experiences using generative AI NLP.

Following the presentation we’ll host a workshop where participants can see a range of healthcare training simulations that use generative AI in VR. These will include training in medical history taking, tracheostomy and drug delivery. For insight into exactly what we do at Sentira, take a look at our recent showreel.

The National Conference on Generative AI in Education aims to give educators, researchers, teachers or students an understanding of how generative AI is revolutionising learning, teaching and assessment.

The conference boasts an impressive speaker lineup. Delegates can expect a series of fascinating keynotes, talks, discussion panels and workshops on AI. They can learn about the latest, cutting-edge technologies and large language models such as ChatGPT, Bard, Claude 2 and Copilot(s). AI in Medical Education: A Jisc Webinar

On October 19th, we’ll be taking part in a Jisc webinar that seeks to explore the use of AI in medical education. The session is aimed at anyone working in the field, regardless of whether they have experience using AI.

Educators who have already trained using AI or VR technologies will have the chance to see how Sentira is leading the way in extending this concept.

Attendees new to XR technologies in medical training will see first-hand what is now possible in this area.

Join us for this session where we’ll demonstrate the onboarding, learning and assessment features of Sentira while showcasing our groundbreaking paediatric tracheostomy simulation. We’ll also show how VR and AI can be used to train users in patient history taking and clinical reasoning. Jeremy and Tony will be available after the showcase to answer attendees’ questions.

The Sentira team is proud to have been invited to present at the prestigious Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Founder Dr Tony Payton and Principal VR Developer, Emily Johnstone will speak at the launch of KidsDigiLabz, an initiative recently established within RMCH. KidsDigiLabz forms part of the delivery of their Research & Innovation (R&I) strategy which looks to advance the application of digital technology within children’s healthcare services across Greater Manchester.

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital has organised the launch event to showcase digital projects that aim to enhance clinical practice, patient experience and research. Visitors to the event can explore the latest advancements in paediatric care through virtual reality, data science, wearable technology and robotics innovation. They will be able to meet the teams behind these innovations and take part in live demonstrations of these groundbreaking technologies.

The event takes place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on September 15th September at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Atrium.

E-ATP 2023… the conference countdown begins!

E-ATP 2023, Vienna, September 20th- 22nd

The E-ATP 2023 conference takes place in Vienna this year from the 20th to the 22nd of September. This annual event is the largest gathering of assessment professionals in Europe.

If you are part of an organisation that uses or is considering the use of assessments to measure the achievement, competency or performance of your workforce or students then E-ATP 2023 is for you. The assessment industry has expanded hugely in recent years and with AI currently transforming the landscape there is much to discuss.

This year’s programme will consist of informative presentations, engaging interactive sessions and distinguished industry keynote speakers.

Delegates will hear how the community is innovating and developing to push assessment forwards and there will be many opportunities to share best practice with colleagues. There will be numerous networking events over the course of the 2-day conference. Delegates will also be able to test out all the latest assessment tools and technologies at the vendor exhibition.

German Bencci, Founder of CodeYourFuture will deliver this year’s Opening Keynote. CodeYourFuture is a tech community supporting disadvantaged people and refugees looking for careers in the tech industry. German will explain how CodeYourFuture works to liberate learners from ‘collecting endless pieces of paper and instead have them focus on building their own, individual, marketable skills’.

Another conference highlight will be a presentation by Sentira XR‘s CEO Jeremy Carter and Paul Edelblut from Vantage Labs. Their joint session is entitled ‘The Intersection of Authenticity and Innovation: VR and AI in Medical Assessment’. Join them at 2:15 pm on 20th September as they explore using Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence in medical assessment on multiple continents.

  • Follow the Journey of an Asthma Drug: Gain a deeper understanding of pharmacology. Trace the path of an asthma medication as it moves throughout the body.

These simulations offer a highly engaging way to refine both technical and interpersonal skills in a safe, controlled environment.

On Monday, November 4th, Professor Steven Yule from The University of Edinburgh will deliver a keynote address titled “How Human Factors Can Contribute to Improvement of Team Performance and Patient Safety”. Professor Yule is Chair of Behavioural Sciences at Edinburgh and leads international innovations in surgical research, human factors and patient safety.

Professor Roger Kneebone will deliver a keynote on “The Transformation of Simulation Over Time”. Professor Kneebone leads the Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Music–Imperial Centre for Performance Science. His research combines his experiences as a surgeon and general practitioner with his interest in expertise beyond medicine. Since 2019, he has been the fourteenth Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy of Arts.

On Tuesday, November 5th, Dr. Claire Kilbride will present the keynote talk, “Simulation in Global Health Partnerships.” Dr. Kilbride is a Senior Clinical Fellow at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. She has extensive experience with Médecins Sans Frontières in various countries and the MSF Field Simulation Team in Barcelona. She currently works with Dharura, a partnership between the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Laikipia County in Kenya, where simulation programs and quality improvement projects are conducted in regional hospitals and clinics.
